Tenum And Kahu by Lol-Pretzel Tenum And Kahu by Lol-Pretzel
Built for round one of the Bio-Cup 2012, where I was tasked with building a toa with a vehicle or mount, against my opponent, Rennoc. Tenum is a former toa of air who accidentally switched elements to aluminium after an accident with the Soulforge. Gringat created The Kahu, a curious skybike armed with disc launchers and spearguns, to aid him in his Duty.
More pictures, information, storyline and the BC2012 on MOCpages! [link]

Both Tenum and the Kahu take on a very nostalgic, saluting stance on the first and second world wars. Namely the brave pilots of Her Majesty's Royal Air Force. Tenum himself is built to look like a pilot, and the Kahu takes after fighter aeroplanes used in the wars while also staying true to the Bionicle world and storyline. There are many old and no-longer-made parts integrated into both of them, to help give a more "vintage" feel. All in all, one of my best, and favourite MOCs of 2012. Topped only by the MOC I built for Round Four ;)

Stock Background used: [link]
Because of the size of the Kahu, I had to create a larger background sheet for the photoshoot. I also made it black so that Tenum's white parts wouldn't become invisible - but that also meant the pictures wouldn't blend into a white background as I commonly make them. I used *3rdeye88's method of framed image over a stock background instead.

Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year everyone!

Since it was for a pretty big contest, I only had a week or so to build the whole thing. I spent several days during the BioCup basically doing nothing but work on my entries. It paid off too. I was one of the three finalists. :)

This gives me an idea for the torso of a MOC I'm working on. I forgot about that part covering the sternum.

Found the guy, still trying to figure out the methods in the torso and ankles. And apparently the rubber bands are to keep it together if he built it the way I think he did.

Yeah, ended up using Brutaka's middle toe behind a Phantoka chest piece. I'm still not happy with how the hips and forearms came out, but I've got time to think about it. By the way, what did you use to connect the thumb? I think that's a part from a different hand design I saw a while ago, but the creator used mini-fig arms for fingers and a rubber band to make the hands able to hold things.

Tenum (or Kahu) kinda reminds me of silverbolt from Transformers: War For Cybertron.

The wings on the toa are amazing, but I feel that they might look even better on a thinner, smaller one. They look like they would be able to be used on some sort of steampunk cherub

They're "Parawings" as opposed to actual functional wings. They're not so much for flying as for falling with style.

...besides, Tenum is about as thin and small as a toa can get.

I meant more of a spindly, short thing, with long axles (crossbars? Whatever the long connectors are) for limns and some form of non-balljoint joints.

All around great MOC. The pilot has great proportion with great design for legs, torso, wings, and arms. The vehicle also has a good design, the shape of the craft is not completely original, but still is carried out well.

The color scheme is well done, possibly my favorite, do mimic that period well but also retain the Bionicle look. His Bio, I thought, was a tad bit strange ONLY because he is a toa of aluminum, when he could be a toa of Iron, but that has no effect on the MOC itself.

Part of my storyline revolves around a device called the Soulforge, that was created by the Great Beings. By manipulating energy and matter, it can do almost anything, but it's mainly used in the storyline to grant new powers to toa that show promise and the capacity to control them.

Tenum's concept has been in my head for years. The aluminium element ties directly with the RAF/aircraft theme - because that is what many planes are/were made from.
Storyline-wise he should have become a toa of Nitrogen, but the Soulforge is a difficult artefact to understand, let alone use, and his Aluminium powers are the result of a mistake on Lord Reglas' part.

If you click the link to Tenum's MOCpage you'll find a tonne more pictures and his storyline written out in full. My posts on DA tend to be little more than advertisements.

Actually (fun fact) most planes from the first world war and to a lesser degree the second world war used canvas and wood. This was a mainstay in WW1, however by WW2 Most had metallic frames with partially aluminum skin. Often flight surfaces still used canvas though.

Aye, true enough, but I don't think a toa of canvas would work quite as well, hm? ^^

Well maybe.

Though here on DA maybe such a Toa could thrive!

This was my favourite moc on the pages. I especially like the details on the ship, the contrast of colours on the ship to the driver, and the driver himself.

Damn I love this guy. The hoses around his neck look like a pilot's and his mask even looks like a breathing mask that high altitude pilots use. And I have no idea how you connected the technic pieces on the wingtip to the blade

Beautiful wings you got there. I'd imagine a plane to be a tad more streamlined, but I like it nonetheless ;D

I really got the vintage vibe from the colors and parts usage. I also love the hands you used on him. I still can't figure out how you made them
